Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday awarded licence to five new banks allowing entry of a fourth set of private banks in the country.
The banks are: NRB Commercial Bank, Union Bank, South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank, NRB Bank and Meghna Bank.
SK Sur Chowdhury, a deputy governor of the central bank, announced the development at a press conference in the afternoon.
Following the nationalisation of banks after the country's independence in 1971, the BB gave licences to private banks at first in 1983. The second set of such banks was allowed in 1995 and the third set in 2001.
